THANK U PAIN

Sometimes we must be hurt in order to grow, we must fail in order to know, and we must loose in order to gain because a few lesions are best learnt through pain. How true and beautiful these lines are!

Most of the time we are attracted to the lighter, brighter and happy side of life. But think seriously and deeply and one would realize that most of the glorious achievements are built on the plinth of dark gloomy painful nights. I have gone through biographies of many achievers who created unbelievable success stories. Almost al of them had gone through pangs of failures, rejection, and humiliation etc or had their hearts broke. Emotional trauma created such a power house of energy in them that they could turn around the whole life. They rose like a poenix from the ashes of their burnt dreams! Why talk abut such great achievers ?

I am sure most of us also must have gone through some such emotional crisis which eventually changed our lives. I have discussed with many of my self-made friends and know about many others whose lives changed after facing some serius emotional challenges.

A young shy timid boy in school metamorphosing into a confident and some what aggressive one after being humiliated by Headmaster in front of school gathering for no fault of his.

A careless, playful teenager neglecting his studies totally and passing barely with grace marks turns overnight into a responsible, studious and brilliant student securing distinctions in all subjects ! This happened as he had to shoulder all the responsibilities of family due to transfer of his father to other city. A tender, romantic love story turning into blues and leaving a broken heart.

The young man in question vows to change his life for betterment and does it with a vengeance! A young professional ridiculed by his senior for professional training gets ignited and leaves a trail of achievements in the pursuit of excellence. There is one more interesting story where a simple, honest person not believing in caste system or untouchables etc at all, becomes a victim of a so called Dalit writer for no reason. In revenge he also starts writing and becomes a prolific writer.

There are many such stories around all of us. Almost all self made people have a story to tell which usually starts with some sort of pain they had gone through justifying the proverb “No pains no gains”. Try to remember an old happy incident; it will bring a smile on your face. But now try to remember an insult, humiliation or rejection you have gone through. Even today, it may bring tears in your eye, raise goose pimples and fill you with rage. The energy generated by emotional trauma is far more as compared to pleasant happenings. But sometimes a few people may not tolerate such low times in life and take self-destructive steps. It is to be avoided.

Physical pain is also a big friend. As a doctor, I tell all my patients that pain is their friend and not a foe. Pain is the one which warns us about a problem in body. It is not a disease but a whistle blower which tells about the disease. Take examples of redness and pain in eyes due to some foreign body or conjunctivitis etc.. Angina (Pain in heart) due to reduced blood supply or pain in abdomen due to inflammation of appendix. These are just a few common examples. On the contrary, in conditions like diabetic foot, where there is no pain no sensation, some times, foot may be totally destroyed as the patient fails to take note to damage. Pain is lke barking of your dog which cautious about some intrusion in house. In that circumstance, you are supposed to remove the intruder and not kill the dog for God shake. Pain will disappear once the problem is over.

So next time whenever you are in pain, emotional or physical, don’t get disturbed as you are with a friend. Just say thank you pain and recite my following line….

Mana khwabokhumar is sazaa hai dard
Ashik-o-ashna-e-junuki kazaa hai dard
Zid aur junooni tevar ka baais hai,’kuchh kar guzarne ki vazaa hai dar.

(Agreed that pain is a penalty for seeing big dreams, pain is the destiny of lovers and passionate people, but pain is responsible for stubbornness and single mindedness, and pain is the fuel for fire in belly to achieve something great).
